Meet the Maker- Brabble Hill Farm
Meet Ali of Brabble Hill Farm. Whoa, hold up, that's me! As the market manager and a vendor there is a point in every interview series where I have to toot my own horn, which is easy because I am as confident in my awesome-ness as I am in the other vendors. I love running the farm and the market because food is a universal connector in a society that is so often at odds with itself. With nothing else in common, we can talk about our favorite recipes or how our gardens are growing and connect to a neighbor. I love the feeling of community that each passing Thursday and Sunday bring me as I get to meet with each of you. You deserve a pat on the back and some fresh flowers, and I know where you can get some ;)
Q. What nicknames do you have?
A. Ali is my nickname, short for Alexandra. My dad called me Pumpkin when I was a kid... and sometimes still does. Other kids used to call me Ali Cat, I did not like that.
Q. What did you do before running your business?
A. I was a design engineer for CNH and I worked on cotton harvesters, sprayers and round balers, which was not something I would ever thought of doing before I did it, but it was great for a while.
Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A. Picking fruits and nuts from our orchard and continuing to bring great food stuffs to the Glen Rock community.
Q. What is your favorite holiday?
A. The next one coming up, which as of now is Labor Day. I enjoy any reason to celebrate with friends and family!
Q. What is the weirdest thing you've had to deal with for your business?
A. I remember someone asking me what an orange thing was on my table (it was a tomato) and I realized how set in our ways we are as eaters that even small differences make food un-recognizable. I’ve spent every day since then thinking up new ways to educate our customers and bring something unexpected.
Q. Send me one of your favorite photos that you don't mind me sharing.
A. Obviously, this is Ali answering the questions, but there are three of us that make up Brabble Hill Farm. Every year I manage to get Steve to join us for 1 or 2 family selfies and those are my favorites.
Q. What is your favorite song to work to?
A. Out in the garden I like to belt out songs along with Paramore, Florence and the Machine, Grace Potter, etc. Anything by powerful singers that can cover up how I sound, ha. Florence and the Machine's Dog Days Are Over is in my head constantly to remind me the heat will end but I won't have anything to show for it if I don't keep working.
Q. Solve for X, show your work: 16-2X = 5X+9
A. 16-2X = 5X+9
16-2X-9 = 5X+9-9
7-2X+2x = 5X+2x
7/7 = 7X/7
1 = X
